      Insurance

Health insurance is a wonderful benefit to have. However, I encourage you to read the information in this section carefully before deciding that you want to use your insurance.  There may be important reasons that you may want to forego using your health insurance for your psychotherapy.

      • First of all, health insurance covers diagnosed mental illness and successful treatment is often defined as the reduction or remission of symptoms. I think that good therapy often goes beyond these limits and that it does not always require a diagnostic label. Also, your particular goals for therapy may not fit into their definitions of  "medical necessity."
      • Second, health insurance policies often put arbitrary limits on the number of sessions you can have and which therapists you can see. I think that you should be able to see a therapist of your own choosing and that you and your therapist are the ones to make decisions about how long you will work together.
      • Third, there is the issue of privacy. When you choose to use your health insurance for therapy, it allows the insurance company to have certain information about you -- your diagnosis, for example. In the age of computers, it's not always clear who has access to this type of private information. When insurance is left out of the process, the information about you and your therapy is not shared with your insurance company. In fact, it is not shared with anyone except as outlined in the limits of confidentiality and according to the provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

If you do choose to use your health insurance, there are a few questions you will need to ask your insurance company about your policy.

      • Do I have mental health benefits?
      • What is my deductible and has it been met?
      • How many sessions per calendar year does my plan cover?
      • How much do you pay for an out-of-net provider?
      • Is there a limitation on how much you will pay per session?
      • Is primary care physician approval required?

You may also want to ask your insurance company for a list of "in-network" providers. I do not participate in any insurance panels at this time, which makes me an "out-of-network" provider. However, out-of-network services may be covered in part by your health insurance or employee benefit plan. Filing claims for these benefits is your responsibility. However, I will be glad to provide a monthly or quarterly statement that you can file for reimbursement.

      Payment

Cash, check, and major credit/debit cards are accepted for payment. (Credit card payment is available online. You may do this on the Make a Payment page on my Web site or you may fill out a credit card authorization form and allow me to process payments.)

      Cancellation Policy

If you do not show up for your scheduled appointment, and you have not notified me at least 24 hours in advance, you will be required to pay the full cost of the scheduled session. However, if the appointment can be rescheduled within the same business week, there will be no charge for the missed session.
